Sometimes things are not easy to hear. They can be shocking, disconcerting, and even make you angry. But one of the reasons why I believe this ruling by the Supreme Court is dangerous is because of what Leviticus says about homosexual practices. One of the arguments by many in the LGBT movement is that the ban on homosexuality doesn’t really apply today. It was an Old Covenant ban so therefore God doesn’t really view it as a perversion today. Well that’s where people need to actually read the text.
Leviticus 18 is very clear about homosexual practices as something detestable to God in any age and time.
Leviticus 18:21–30 (HCSB)
21 “You are not to make any of your children pass through the fire to Molech. Do not profane the name of your God; I am Yahweh. 22 You are not to sleep with a man as with a woman; it is detestable. 23 You are not to have sexual intercourse with any animal, defiling yourself with it; a woman is not to present herself to an animal to mate with it; it is a perversion.
24 “Do not defile yourselves by any of these practices, for the nations I am driving out before you have defiled themselves by all these things. 25 The land has become defiled, so I am punishing it for its sin, and the land will vomit out its inhabitants. 26 But you are to keep My statutes and ordinances. You must not commit any of these detestable things—not the native or the foreigner who lives among you. 27 For the men who were in the land prior to you have committed all these detestable things, and the land has become defiled. 28 If you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it has vomited out the nations that were before you. 29 Any person who does any of these detestable practices must be cut off from his people. 30 You must keep My instruction to not do any of the detestable customs that were practiced before you, so that you do not defile yourselves by them; I am Yahweh your God.”
Note there are three detestable practices listed here: child sacrifice, homosexual acts, and bestiality.
Note that God viewed the nations that practiced these things as defiled and the reason they were driven out of the land was because of these detestable practices. In other words they suffered the judgment of God in a very clear and definite way because of homosexual practices.
I want you to note that although we do not offer child sacrifices well over a million children a year are aborted. And many in our country want late term abortions when the baby is viable outside the womb. That’s pretty serious.
Second the Supreme court has now recognized and society has pretty much accepted homosexual practices as legitimate. I was recently conversing with numerous people that call themselves Christians that agree with homosexual practice and marriage. Scary.
Thus of the detestable practices used for the reason that God drove out the nations from the land of Canaan we are firmly grounded in the midst of two of them.
Note the reason in Genesis that God did not drive them out immediately was because their sin had not yet come to the point where it was serious enough (Genesis 15:16).
Note that if Israel conducted themselves in this way they would be driven out of the land as well. Which actually happened! God fulfilled the promise!
So where does this put the United States? We are now one of the nations that have defiled themselves by two of the three reasons God judged the nations of the land of Canaan. Has our wickedness reached it’s full measure? Hard to say.
What can we expect? If there is no repentance judgment will come. Do we really think the United States is more powerful than God?
Over and over again God has promised mercy to the repentant. But there does come a point where His patience runs out.
